Chapter 1

I signed the divorce papers on a hospital bed, three hours after losing our baby, while my husband's mistress sat in his car downstairs, waiting for him to come back to her.

The pen shook in my hand. Not from grief—I had already screamed myself hollow in the operating room when the doctor told me my son was gone. Not from shock—I had known about Vanessa for months. I shook because of the look on Elliot Cross's face as he stood at the foot of my bed.

Impatience.

He was impatient. His wife had just lost their child, and he couldn't wait to leave.

"Sign the last page, Clara." His voice was flat, businesslike, the same tone he used in boardrooms. "My lawyer needs the documents by tonight."

I stared at him—this man I had loved since I was nineteen. Tall, devastatingly handsome, with a jaw that could cut glass and eyes the color of a winter storm. I had once thought those eyes held warmth. I had been wrong.

"Your son died four hours ago," I whispered. "And you're standing here with divorce papers."

A flicker of something crossed his face. Guilt? No. Elliot Cross didn't feel guilt. He felt inconvenience.

"The marriage was a contract, Clara. We both knew the terms."

The terms. Three years ago, Elliot's grandfather had made his inheritance conditional on marriage. He needed a wife—someone quiet, obedient, someone who wouldn't cause problems. I was the daughter of his family's bankrupt business partner. A convenient transaction.

I had been stupid enough to fall in love with him anyway.

"I gave you everything," I said, my voice cracking despite my effort to hold it together. "I gave up my career. My family. I moved into your world and played the perfect wife for three years. And this is how it ends?"

Elliot's jaw tightened. "You'll receive the settlement we agreed on. Five million. It's more than generous."

More than generous.

He was buying me off. Packaging the destruction of my life into a wire transfer.

My eyes burned, but I refused to cry in front of him. I had cried enough. In empty bedrooms while he worked late—or claimed to. In bathrooms at charity galas where Vanessa would smile at me, knowing she had just left my husband's hotel suite.

I signed the last page.

"There," I said, shoving the papers toward him. "You're free."

Elliot took the folder without a word. He turned toward the door, and for one pathetic, desperate second, I thought he might look back. Might say something—anything—that proved the last three years hadn't been completely meaningless.

He didn't.

The door clicked shut, and I was alone.

I pressed my hand against my empty stomach, feeling the absence of the life that had been growing inside me just that morning. A boy. The doctor said it would have been a boy.

Elliot didn't even know the gender. He hadn't asked.

I sat in that hospital bed for a long time, staring at the bare finger where my wedding ring had been. Then, slowly, something shifted inside me. The grief didn't disappear—it hardened. Turned into something sharper, colder.

I reached for my phone and dialed the one number I had sworn I would never call.

"It's Clara," I said when the line connected. "I need your help."

A pause. Then a voice I hadn't heard in years.

"I've been waiting for this call."

My older brother, Daniel—the one person Elliot had made sure to cut from my life. The man who had warned me from the beginning that Elliot Cross would destroy me.

He had been right.

"I want to take him down," I said, and for the first time in three years, my voice didn't shake. "Every company. Every asset. Every lie. I want all of it."

Daniel exhaled slowly. "Then come home, Clara. We have work to do."

I hung up the phone and looked out the window. Elliot's black Maybach was pulling out of the hospital parking lot.

He thought he had discarded me. Thrown me away like a contract that had expired.

He had no idea what he had just unleashed.
