Chapter 3

The Ashford Foundation's boardroom was on the 40th floor — all glass, all power, all intimidation. I arrived early, dressed in a charcoal Dior suit I hadn't worn in three years. It still fit. My hair was pulled back, my makeup minimal, my heels sharp enough to kill.

I barely recognized myself in the reflection. The woman staring back wasn't Nora Carter, the exhausted housewife who made her husband's lunches and balanced his books at midnight. She was Nora Ashford, heiress, strategist, and — as of six a.m. this morning — the newest sitting member of the Ashford Foundation board.

Eleanor had gotten the unanimous vote overnight. She didn't tell me how.

I didn't ask.

The board filed in — seven people, old money, sharp eyes. They nodded at me with a deference that felt foreign and intoxicating.

Then the door opened, and Liam walked in.

He looked good. He always looked good — that was the problem. Tall, jaw like a Calvin Klein ad, wearing a suit that I knew he couldn't afford, which meant Jessica had bought it.

He carried a glossy pitch deck and the easy confidence of a man who had never once been told no by a woman.

He scanned the room, working the crowd with his trademark charm. His gaze passed over me—

And kept moving.

He didn't recognize me.

I sat six feet from the man who had shared my bed for three years, the father of my child, and he looked through me like I was furniture.

Something in my chest didn't break. It ignited.

"Mr. Carter," Eleanor said from the head of the table, "you may begin."

Liam launched into his pitch. It was polished. Rehearsed. And every single selling point — the farm-to-table concept, the seasonal rotation model, the signature broth recipe — was mine.

My ideas. My late nights. My culinary school thesis, almost word for word.

He presented it as his life's work.

I let him finish. I let him grin. I let him feel the room warming to him.

Then Eleanor turned to me. "Ms. Ashford, your assessment?"

Liam's head snapped toward me. "Ashford?"

I opened the folder in front of me, not looking up.

"Your farm-to-table model is derivative. Your financial projections are based on a single-location revenue model that doesn't scale. And your signature recipe—" I finally looked up, meeting his eyes, "—is not yours."

The blood drained from his face.

Not because of the critique.

Because he finally saw me.

"Nora?" he whispered, the word cracking in his throat.

The entire board turned to look at him.

I held his gaze, seven seats apart, and felt nothing but the cold, clean weight of the truth settling between us.

"The board will need time to deliberate," I said smoothly, closing the folder. "Thank you for your time, Mr. Carter."

His mouth opened. Closed. Opened again.

"You're... you're an Ashford?"

I didn't answer. I turned to the board secretary.

"Next applicant, please."

Liam didn't move. His hands gripped the edge of the table, knuckles white.

Security escorted him out.

As the door closed behind him, my phone buzzed under the table. A text from an unknown number.

"You humiliated me. You'll regret this. I'm calling my lawyer — and I'm taking Lily."

My fingers tightened around the phone. He could threaten me. He could insult me. But the moment he typed my daughter's name, he declared a war he had no idea how to fight.

I forwarded the message to my attorney — the most expensive family lawyer in the country, already on retainer.

Then I typed back a single line:

"Try."
