Chapter 3

I didn't call Director Liu immediately. First, I needed to handle the legal battlefield Nathan had set up.

I went straight to see my lawyer, Helen Park. She was a shark in Chanel—the kind of woman who made opposing counsel physically uncomfortable.

When I showed her the prenup, she actually smiled.

"Vivian, did Nathan even read this before he signed it?"

"No. He said, and I quote, 'I don't need to read it because I'll never cheat.'"

Helen flipped to the fidelity clause on page four. "If either party engages in an extramarital affair, the offending party forfeits all claims to shared assets and shall pay the other party liquidated damages in the amount of...' She looked up at me. "Two million dollars."

"I wrote that clause myself," I said.

"Of course you did." Helen's grin was almost predatory. "And you have proof of the affair?"

I slid my phone across the table. On it was a security camera screenshot I'd pulled that morning—Nathan and Brianna in the on-call room, timestamp clearly visible. I'd also saved text messages Brianna had carelessly sent to a group chat, bragging about her "secret boyfriend who happens to be a surgeon."

Helen examined everything, then leaned back in her chair. "Vivian, this isn't just a divorce case. This is a massacre."

"Good," I said. "But I'm not ready to file yet."

She raised an eyebrow.

"Nathan filed a false HR complaint against me. He's trying to get me fired. If I file for divorce now, he'll know I have leverage, and he'll start destroying evidence."

Helen nodded slowly. "Smart. So what's your play?"

"I'm going to let him think he's winning. Let him and Brianna get comfortable. Let them make more mistakes." I paused. "Meanwhile, I have a phone call to make."

That afternoon, I called Director Raymond Liu.

Pinnacle Medical Center was not just any hospital. It was the number one ranked medical institution in the state—a research powerhouse that attracted patients from around the world. St. Albans was a community hospital by comparison.

Director Liu answered on the first ring.

"Dr. Ashford. I was hoping you'd call."

"How did you find out?" I asked.

"Your paper on minimally invasive cardiac repair in neonates was published under your pen name, but the surgical technique you described? I watched a recording of an identical procedure performed at St. Albans last year. Listed surgeon: Dr. Vivian Cross. It wasn't hard to connect the dots."

I closed my eyes. I'd been so careful.

"I'm not calling to expose you," he said quickly. "I'm calling because Pinnacle is launching a new Advanced Surgical Innovation Center. We need a director. Someone brilliant, fearless, and frankly, someone the medical world will take seriously. That's you."

"You don't even know me personally."

"I know your work. That's enough." He paused. "Dr. Ashford—Vivian—I've read all seven of your papers. The technique you developed for pediatric thoracic surgery has already saved lives in hospitals across three continents. You're not just a good surgeon. You're a generational talent hiding in a broom closet."

My throat tightened. No one—not Nathan, not my colleagues, not anyone—had ever spoken about my work like that.

"What's the offer?" I asked.

"Full directorship of the new center. Your own surgical team. A research budget that would make most universities weep. And equity partnership in the center's future patents."

I was quiet for a long moment.

"Dr. Cross?" he prompted.

"It's Dr. Ashford," I corrected. "And I accept."

When I hung up, I sat in my car in the parking garage for a full five minutes, just breathing.

For twelve years, I had made myself small. I had swallowed my ambition, bitten my tongue, and let Nathan believe he was the star while I worked miracles in the shadows.

That ended today.

My phone buzzed again. This time, it was Nathan.

"Vivian, HR approved your suspension. Don't bother coming back until further notice. Also, Brianna is moving into the house. I need you to get your things out by Friday."

Below it, a second message:

"And please don't make a scene. It's embarrassing for both of us."

I stared at the screen.

Then I typed back two words: "Keep it."

Let him have the house. Let him have Brianna. Let him have his little kingdom at St. Albans.

He had no idea what was coming.
