Chapter 1

She signed away her womb for $200,000. He married another woman the same night. Now, five years later, their son needs a bone marrow transplant—and the only match is the billionaire who never wanted him.

"Mrs. Ashford, your son's leukemia has relapsed. Without a matched donor within three months, I'm afraid…"

The doctor didn't finish the sentence. He didn't need to.

Elena Ashford gripped the edge of the chair so hard her knuckles turned white. The fluorescent lights buzzed overhead like flies circling a corpse.

Three months.

Ninety days to find a bone marrow match for a five-year-old boy whose father didn't know he existed.

She had spent five years building walls. Five years running. Five years telling herself that Lucas Blackwell—CEO of Blackwell Industries, Manhattan's golden son, the man whose child she had carried in secret—was a closed chapter.

Now biology was ripping that chapter wide open.

"There must be another way," she whispered.

The doctor removed his glasses and rubbed the bridge of his nose. "We've searched every registry. No match. Given the genetic profile, a biological parent would be the strongest candidate."

A biological parent.

The words landed like a grenade in her chest.

She could still remember the night it all began. She was twenty-two, drowning in her mother's hospital bills, working double shifts at a diner that smelled of burnt coffee and broken dreams.

The ad had been clinical: Healthy female, 21-28, compensation $200,000, full confidentiality guaranteed.

She hadn't known who the father was. The agency kept everything anonymous. She was told it was a wealthy couple struggling with fertility—that her baby would go to a loving home.

She'd signed the contract, carried the child for nine months, and felt him kick at three a.m. when the world was silent.

Then everything went wrong.

The "couple" turned out to be a lie. There was no wife. Only Lucas Blackwell, who had arranged the surrogacy behind his family's back to produce an heir before his thirtieth birthday—a condition of his grandfather's will.

But three weeks before her due date, Lucas married Victoria Langley, heiress to the Langley media empire, in a ceremony that made the front page of every tabloid in the country.

The agency called Elena that same night.

"Mr. Blackwell no longer requires the child. The contract is void. You may keep the baby or surrender it to the state. Your compensation has been deposited."

She remembered standing in her cramped studio apartment, one hand on her swollen belly, the other holding the phone, and feeling something inside her snap—not break, snap—like a bone resetting itself.

She kept the baby.

She named him Ethan.

And she vanished.

For five years, she had scraped together a life in Portland—far from Manhattan, far from Lucas Blackwell's world of skyscrapers and champagne. She worked at a veterinary clinic during the day and freelanced as a bookkeeper at night. Ethan grew up bright-eyed and stubborn, with his father's jaw and her stubbornness.

He never asked about his dad. Not once.

Until six months ago, when the bruises appeared.

Now Elena stood outside the hospital, the Portland rain soaking through her jacket, and dialed the one number she had sworn never to call.

Her old attorney, Martin, answered on the second ring.

"Elena? It's been years. What's—"

"I need to find Lucas Blackwell."

Silence.

"Elena, you made me promise—"

"My son is dying, Martin." Her voice cracked like thin ice. "I need his father's bone marrow, and I need it now."

The rain fell harder. Somewhere inside the hospital, Ethan was sleeping under a white blanket, his small body fighting a war it couldn't win alone.

Martin exhaled. "Lucas Blackwell got divorced eight months ago. It was all over the news."

Elena's hand tightened on the phone.

"He's back in Manhattan," Martin continued. "But Elena—he doesn't know about Ethan. If you go to him, everything you've built—"

"I don't care."

Three words. Quiet. Final.

She would walk into the lion's den. She would face the man who had discarded her child like a canceled order.

And she would make him save their son—whether he wanted to or not.
