Chapter 1

On the day Elena was thrown out of the Aldric family, her twin sister married her fiancé, her mother slapped her across the face, and the most powerful man in the city told her — "Marry me instead."

The wedding was in full swing.

Crystal chandeliers. White roses. A string quartet playing Pachelbel's Canon while three hundred of the city's elite raised their champagne glasses.

At the altar stood Lucas Ashford, the man Elena had loved since she was sixteen — the man who had been her fiancé until seventy-two hours ago.

And beside him, wearing Elena's custom-made wedding dress, was her twin sister, Vivian.

Elena stood at the back of the ballroom in a maid's uniform. Her mother, Constance, had insisted on it.

"Since you're no longer the Aldric heiress, you should at least make yourself useful. Serve the champagne. And for God's sake, don't embarrass us."

Elena's fingers tightened around the silver tray. The champagne flutes trembled, but she steadied them — the way she had steadied herself through twenty-three years of being told she wasn't enough.

She watched Lucas lift Vivian's veil with such tenderness it made her stomach lurch.

Three days ago, he had sat across from her at dinner and said, "I've thought about this carefully. Vivian is better suited to be my wife. She understands my world. You should step aside gracefully — it's the least you can do for your sister."

The least she could do.

As if she hadn't already given everything.

Her education fund — redirected to Vivian's fashion degree in Paris. Her bedroom — converted into Vivian's walk-in closet. Her seat at the family table — replaced by a stool in the kitchen.

And now, her wedding.

"Elena! Table seven needs more champagne. Move!" Constance's sharp voice cut through the music.

Elena turned, but her heel caught on the carpet edge. The tray tipped. Three glasses of champagne cascaded down the front of a man's bespoke suit.

Time froze.

The man was tall — impossibly tall — with a face that looked carved from marble and eyes so dark they seemed to swallow light. He didn't flinch. Didn't even blink as the golden liquid soaked through silk that probably cost more than everything Elena owned.

Every server within ten feet went pale.

Elena recognized him instantly. Everyone in this city would.

Dominic Veyne. CEO of Veyne Industries. The man whose single phone call could bankrupt half the families in this room.

"I — I'm so sorry, I—"

"You're shaking," he said. Not angry. Just observing, the way one might note the weather.

Before Elena could respond, Constance materialized, grabbing her arm so hard the bruise would last a week.

"Mr. Veyne, I am so deeply sorry! This girl is clumsy and worthless — she's not even a real member of our family. I'll have her punished immediately—"

"Not a real member?" Dominic's gaze shifted to Constance, and something in his expression made the older woman's grip loosen involuntarily.

At the altar, the officiant's voice boomed: "If anyone objects to this union, speak now or forever hold your peace."

Silence.

Elena stared at Lucas — at the man who had promised her forever — and felt the last thread of hope snap.

Then Dominic leaned down, his voice low enough for only her to hear.

"You look like someone who's about to lose everything." A pause. "What if I offered you a way to get it all back?"

Elena looked up at him, champagne still dripping from his jacket, and whispered, "What do you mean?"

His lips curved — not quite a smile, not quite a threat.

"Marry me."
