Chapter 1

On the night of my fifth wedding anniversary, I was burying my stillborn daughter in a private cemetery outside Chicago, when I heard my husband's lieutenant whisper that the baby had never been dead at all.

"Boss gave the kid to the Morettis. Collateral for the Jersey deal. The wife still thinks it was a stillbirth."

My knees were in the mud. Rain hammered the tiny white casket — empty, I now understood — while Dante Valenti, the most feared man on the Eastern Seaboard, stood behind me holding a black umbrella, his hand on my shoulder, squeezing gently.

"Let it out, bella. I'm here."

I had been married to Dante for five years. I had loved him with the kind of blind, burning devotion that makes women into ghosts. I had left my entire life behind — my family, my career, my name — to become Mrs. Valenti, queen of a kingdom built on blood and silence.

And six months ago, when the doctors told me my baby girl had been stillborn at thirty-six weeks, Dante had held me while I screamed. He had stroked my hair while I shattered. He had carried me out of the hospital and whispered, "We'll get through this together."

He had buried an empty casket.

And sold my daughter like cargo.

I stood in that cemetery with rain streaming down my face, and something inside me didn't break — it rearranged. Every molecule of grief chemically converted into something harder, colder, sharper than anything Dante Valenti had ever encountered.

Because there was something my husband didn't know about me.

Something no one in his world knew.

Before I was Bella Valenti, I was Special Agent Elena Ruiz, FBI Organized Crime Division, recruited out of Quantico at twenty-two, inserted into Dante's orbit at twenty-four, and married to him by twenty-five as part of the longest-running deep cover operation in Bureau history.

For five years, I had been feeding intelligence to my handler. For five years, I had been building a case that would dismantle the Valenti empire from the inside.

But somewhere in those five years, the unthinkable happened.

I fell in love with my target.

I got pregnant.

And I stopped reporting.

My handler, SSA David Chen, had gone dark on me fourteen months ago after I missed six consecutive check-ins. I assumed the Bureau had written me off — burned agent, compromised asset, too far gone to salvage.

But now, standing over an empty grave, I realized the mission had never been over.

It had just changed.

I wasn't going to take down Dante Valenti for the FBI anymore.

I was going to take him down for her. For my daughter. For Lily.

The rain intensified. Dante pulled me closer.

"Come home, bella. You'll get sick out here."

I leaned into him, letting his warmth wrap around me one final time.

"Okay," I whispered. "Take me home."

His lips pressed against my temple. "That's my girl."

His girl. His weapon. His biggest mistake.

Because the woman Dante Valenti had married to control was the one person trained to destroy him — and he had just given her the only reason she needed.
