Chapter 3

Caleb was in the kitchen, moving slowly, still healing.

He was making soup — the ginger chicken soup he always made when the weather turned cold, because he knew I got chills easily.

The apartment smelled warm and familiar, and for one fleeting second, I hesitated.

Then my phone buzzed. A text from Jordan.

"Can't wait to start our life together."

I set the papers on the kitchen table.

"Caleb."

He turned, saw the documents, and went still.

"I've already filled out my part," I said, keeping my voice steady. "You just need to sign."

He wiped his hands on a dish towel — slowly, methodically — and picked up the papers.

His eyes scanned the pages. No property disputes, no alimony. A clean break.

"You're sure?" he asked quietly.

"Jordan is recovering well. He wants to be together. Properly, this time."

"I meant—" He paused, then shook his head. "Never mind."

He reached for a pen.

"Caleb, I... I'm grateful for everything. The debt, the surgery — you saved his life. I won't forget that."

His pen hovered over the signature line.

"Mara, can I ask you one thing?"

"What?"

"In two years of marriage, was there ever a moment — even one — where you saw me?"

The question hit somewhere I didn't expect.

"Caleb, don't make this harder than—"

"You're right. Forget it."

He signed.

Clean, steady strokes. No trembling, no tears.

He set the pen down and slid the papers back to me.

"The soup will be ready in ten minutes. You should eat before you go."

I took the papers and walked toward the bedroom to pack my things.

Behind me, I heard him turn the stove off.

He didn't eat that night. I knew because the soup was still sitting untouched on the counter when I came out with my suitcase.

At the door, I turned back one last time.

Caleb was sitting on the couch — his couch, the one he'd slept on for two years so I could have the bed — staring at the white rose on the kitchen counter.

It was Monday. He'd still bought the flower.

"Goodbye, Caleb."

"Goodbye, Mara."

I closed the door.

I moved in with Jordan the same week.

His apartment was everything Caleb's wasn't — modern, spacious, filled with designer furniture and natural light.

Jordan swept me into his arms the moment I arrived.

"Finally," he whispered. "This is how it should have always been."

I believed him.

For exactly three months, I believed him.

The first crack appeared when Jordan's mother returned from abroad.

Victoria Hale walked into Jordan's apartment unannounced, took one look at me, and set her Birkin bag on the counter like she was marking territory.

"So. She's here."

"Mother—" Jordan started.

"Don't." Victoria's smile was surgical. "I heard about your little surgery. Very dramatic. A stranger donating a kidney — how charitable."

She looked at me. "And you left that charitable stranger to move in with my son. How romantic."

Jordan stepped forward. "I told you, I don't care about your opinion anymore."

"Oh, darling, you will. Because I've just finalized the merger with the Ashford Group. Your name is on every document. Walk away from that, and you walk away from everything."

The room went cold.

Jordan's jaw tightened, but he said nothing.

Victoria turned to leave, then paused at the door.

"By the way, Mara, was it? Your ex-husband — the mechanic — I ran into the most interesting rumor about him at my business dinner last night."

"What rumor?" I asked.

She smiled. "Oh, nothing confirmed. Just that someone named Caleb Blackwell recently acquired a seventy-percent stake in a medical technology company. Blackwell — common name, I suppose."

She left.

Jordan laughed it off. "A mechanic buying a tech company? She's just trying to get in your head."

I laughed too.

But that night, I couldn't sleep.

I typed "Caleb Blackwell" into the search engine.

No results. Just a few generic social media profiles. Nothing unusual.

I told myself it was nothing.

But the seed had been planted.
