Chapter 2

I didn't tell anyone I was leaving. Not Ethan's family, not the household staff, not even Margaret—the housekeeper who'd been the closest thing I had to a friend in that cold penthouse.

By morning, I was on a flight to Baltimore.

For three years, I'd shrunk myself to fit inside Ethan Blackwell's world. I'd worn modest clothes so Vivienne's friends wouldn't call me a gold digger. I'd bitten my tongue when his mother, Diana Blackwell, introduced me at galas as "the contract girl." I'd worked night shifts at the hospital under a fake name so no one would connect me to the Blackwell family.

Now, at 30,000 feet, I felt like I could finally breathe.

My phone had been off since I left, but when I powered it on during the layover, there were no missed calls from Ethan. Not one.

There were, however, fourteen missed calls from Margaret.

I called her back.

"Clara! Where are you? Mr. Blackwell came home this morning and found the signed papers. He—" She lowered her voice. "He didn't even react. He just picked up the ring, put it in his pocket, and left for Ms. Ashford's apartment."

My chest didn't even hurt anymore. That's how I knew it was really over.

"Margaret, I left an envelope in the nightstand drawer. It's for you—a recommendation letter and some savings. You've been kind to me. Please use it."

"Clara, you can't just—"

"Take care of yourself."

I hung up and boarded my connecting flight.

At Johns Hopkins, everything moved fast. My new team didn't know me as Clara Blackwell—they knew me as Dr. Clara Whitfield, the prodigy who'd published twelve papers on minimally invasive cardiac surgery before age 30.

Within a week, I had an office, a surgical team, and my first case: a pro bono operation on a six-year-old girl with a congenital heart defect so severe that three hospitals had already turned her away.

I was studying her scans late one night when a knock came at my office door.

"Dr. Whitfield? There's a visitor for you. He says he's from Blackwell Memorial."

My stomach dropped.

But the man who walked in wasn't Ethan. He was taller, broader, with sharp features and an easy confidence that filled the room without trying.

"Dr. Whitfield." He extended his hand. "I'm Adrian Blackwell. Ethan's older brother."

I'd heard of Adrian. The eldest Blackwell son who'd left the family empire to build his own venture capital firm. The black sheep. The one Diana Blackwell never talked about.

He had Ethan's last name but none of his coldness. His eyes were warm, almost amused, as if he already knew something I didn't.

"I'm here because my niece—well, she's not technically my niece yet—is your patient. Lily Chen, the six-year-old? Her mother is a friend of mine."

"Small world," I said carefully.

"Smaller than you think." He leaned against the doorframe. "I also know you're the surgeon behind the Blackwell Procedure. The one my grandfather's been trying to find for two years."

My blood went cold. "How?"

Adrian smiled. "Because I've been looking for you too, Dr. Whitfield. And unlike my brother, I actually pay attention."
