Chapter 1

My husband annulled our marriage at our daughter's funeral.

His mistress stood beside him in black lace. She was pregnant with his son. And he slid the papers across the casket like he was passing the salt.

"Sign it, Aria," Matteo said. "Don't embarrass the family. Not today."

Two years of marriage to the Falcone heir. Two years of swallowing his cruelty, of smiling through his mother's poison, of being the "street girl" he'd married for reasons no one understood. And now I stood over the tiny white coffin of the baby I'd lost at birth — the baby he'd never once come to see in the hospital — and he wanted my signature.

"You want me to sign," I said quietly, "here. Over her."

"It's cleaner this way." He didn't even check his watch. He didn't need to. He simply expected me to obey, the way I always had. "Gianna and I have a future to think about."

Gianna touched her belly and gave me a small, sorrowful smile. "I'm so sorry, Aria. We never meant to fall in love. It just... happened."

I almost laughed. I would have, if my throat hadn't been full of grief.

For two years, the Falcone family had treated me like dirt they'd scraped off Matteo's expensive shoes. The waitress he found in a Brooklyn diner. His mother whispered it at every dinner. A nobody. A charity case.

They had no idea who I was.

I picked up the pen.

"Aria, hurry," Matteo snapped. "You're upsetting Gianna."

Gianna, draped in the diamonds Matteo had bought her, dabbed at dry eyes.

I signed my name in three clean strokes. Aria Falcone. The last time I'd ever use it.

Then I set the pen down on the white wood and slid the papers back.

"There," I said. "You're free."

Matteo exhaled like a man released from prison. He scooped up the documents without looking at me. "You can stay in the penthouse until the end of the month. After that, it goes to Gianna."

How generous. The penthouse his family owned. The one they reminded me daily I didn't deserve.

I picked up my coat. At the casket, I paused, and pressed two fingers to the cold lid.

I'm sorry, little one. I'm sorry I couldn't save you. But I promise — your father will pay.

"Matteo," I said at the door.

"What?"

"When was the last time you actually looked at me?"

He frowned. "Don't start with—"

"It's a real question." I smiled, and something in it made him go still. "Because in a week, you'll wish you had looked very, very carefully."

I walked out before he could answer.

My phone buzzed the second the doors closed.

One missed call. A name I hadn't seen in five years.

Nonno.

My grandfather hadn't spoken to me since the night I'd walked away from the family — the name, the empire, the blood — just to prove I could survive as a woman, not a weapon. To prove I wasn't only Salvatore De Luca's granddaughter.

The voicemail was one sentence.

"Aria. It's time to come home. The Commission has named you. You will lead the De Luca family now."

My grandmother had died last month. The most feared woman the five families had ever known.

And she'd left me her entire empire.

The same empire that, as of nine this morning, held every dollar of debt the bankrupt Falcone family owed.

The elevator opened into the lobby, and for the first time in two years, I stood up straight.

They buried a waitress.

They had no idea they'd just divorced their queen.
