Chapter 1

The night Elara Sinclair went into labor alone on a bathroom floor, her billionaire husband was forty miles away, holding another woman's hand at a candlelit dinner. She called him seventeen times. He picked up on the eighteenth—and told her to stop being dramatic.

She almost bled to death delivering twins.

When Cillian Blackwell finally arrived at the hospital six hours later, his face was a portrait of anguish. He gripped her hand, pressed his forehead to her knuckles, and whispered with a broken voice, "I'll never forgive myself, Elara. The meeting ran late. I didn't see your calls until it was over."

His older brother, Dorian Blackwell—the patriarch of the Blackwell empire and the man who had arranged their marriage—stormed in behind him, firing the entire obstetrics team on the spot.

"If my daughter-in-law had died tonight, I would have buried every last one of you," Dorian snarled, his cold authority making the room tremble.

Elara looked at both men through a haze of exhaustion and felt, despite everything, safe.

She shouldn't have.

Because later that night, when morphine dulled the pain enough for silence to settle, she heard them talking outside her door.

"The babies are healthy. Both boys. Violet will be thrilled." Cillian's voice was calm. Clinical. Not a trace of the anguish he'd performed at her bedside.

Dorian replied with quiet precision. "Good. We let Elara nurse them for three months—doctor says the antibodies matter. Then Violet takes over as their mother. The surrogacy contract is airtight."

"And Elara?"

"She gets her payment and disappears. She was never supposed to be anything more than a vessel, Cillian. Don't complicate this."

Elara's fingers turned white against the hospital sheets.

Surrogacy contract.

Vessel.

She had been told she was Cillian's wife—chosen, cherished, loved. Dorian himself had walked her down the aisle when she had no father to do it. He'd called her "the daughter I never had."

Now she understood: every tender word, every protective gesture, every moment she believed she had a family—it was all choreographed to keep the vessel cooperative.

And Violet—Violet Ashford, the elegant socialite who visited the Blackwell estate "as a family friend"—was not a friend at all.

She was the woman they actually loved.

The woman her babies were always meant for.

Elara pressed her fist against her mouth to keep from screaming. Down the hall, her newborn sons began to cry—and no one went to them but the night nurse.

She had forty-eight hours before the milk came in.

She had ninety days before they took everything.

Unless she found a way out first.
