Chapter 1

I married him for revenge.

He married me because he thought I was a nobody.

On our wedding night, I drugged his wine, stole his DNA sample, and sent it to a lab.

The results confirmed it — his family destroyed mine.

So I smiled, kissed his cheek, and whispered, "Goodnight, husband."

The war satisfying to start.

1

Three years ago, I was the heiress of Hartwell Pharmaceuticals.

Then, in one night, I became an orphan.

My father's company was swallowed whole by Blackwell Empire in a hostile takeover so brutal it made the Wall Street Journal's front page.

The media called it "a strategic acquisition."

I called it murder.

Because the night the deal closed, my father swallowed a bottle of pills in his office. My mother, already fragile, followed him three weeks later.

The death certificates said natural causes and suicide.

But I found the letters. The forged documents. The insider who sold us out.

Every trail led back to one name — Blackwell.

Not the old man. Not the board.

Ethan Blackwell. The eldest son. The heir. The one they called "The Architect" because he built empires on the ruins of others.

At twenty-six, I had nothing left but a face no one in that world recognized — because my parents had kept me out of the public eye my entire life, educated abroad since fourteen — and a rage so deep it had become my spine.

My best friend, Mara, a cosmetic surgeon's daughter with access to high society, handed me a glass of wine and a file folder.

"Blackwell Empire is hosting a charity gala next month. Ethan needs a wife. His grandfather's will requires him to marry before thirty to claim the remaining 40% of shares. He turns thirty in four months."

I opened the folder.

His face stared back at me — sharp jaw, dark eyes, the kind of beauty that made you forget he was dangerous.

"He's been rejecting every candidate from elite families," Mara continued. "His mother is desperate. She wants someone... manageable. Low-profile. No powerful family backing that could challenge them."

"Someone like a nobody," I said.

"Someone exactly like the identity I built for you." Mara grinned. "Meet Iris Lane. Middle-class family, deceased parents, excellent education, mild temperament. A perfect paper doll."

I stared at his photo, then closed the folder.

"Set it up."

...

The gala was in a Blackwell-owned hotel — because of course it was. They owned half the city.

I wore a champagne-colored dress, understated, elegant. My hair was down, soft. Everything about me whispered safe, harmless, forgettable.

I was none of those things.

Ethan arrived late, which I'd anticipated. The file said he hated these events.

What I didn't anticipate was theeli effect of seeing him in person.

He was taller than expected. His presence reorganized the gravity of the room.

Every woman straightened. Every man stiffened.

And when his gaze swept the room — bored, clinical, dismissive — it stopped on me for 1.3 seconds.

I knew because I counted.

I looked away first. Shy smile. Slight blush. Took a sip of my drink with a trembling hand.

The trembling was real.

Not from nerves.

From the violence of my own heartbeat screaming: That's the man who killed your father.

His mother, Victoria Blackwell, approached me twenty minutes later.

"You must be Iris. Mara's friend?"

"Yes, ma'am." Soft voice. Gentle eye contact. "Thank you for the invitation. This is... beyond anything I'm used to."

Victoria smiled like a woman who'd just found the perfect pawn.

"Dear, come. Let me introduce you to my son."

I followed her, and when Ethan turned to face me, I extended my hand.

"It's an honor, Mr. Blackwell."

He shook it. His grip was firm. His eyes searched mine for two seconds longer than polite.

"Ethan," he corrected.

And I thought: You have no idea what's coming.
