Chapter 1

On the night I planned to tell my husband I was pregnant, he slid a contract across our dinner table.

"Sign it," Grayson said. "We were never legally married."

Tomorrow he would announce his engagement to a billionaire's daughter.

He had no idea what I'd done at the courthouse three years ago.

I stared at the papers. The positive test was still in the pocket of my cardigan, wrapped in tissue. I had planned the whole evening around it: candles, his favorite short ribs, our third-anniversary bottle of wine that I wasn't going to drink.

Non-Disclosure and Separation Agreement. Below it, a cashier's check for fifty thousand dollars.

"I don't understand," I said.

Grayson loosened his tie. He was still in the navy suit he'd worn to the investor meeting, and he looked at me the way he looked at a bug in the code. It was a problem to delete.

"Halecrest goes public in three weeks," he said. "Whitmore Capital is leading the round. Richard Whitmore wants his daughter married to the founder before the bell rings." He shrugged. "So I'm marrying Sloane."

"You're married to me."

"Am I?" He leaned back. "Think about it, Wren. A ten-minute courthouse ceremony. No witnesses but a stranger from the hallway. I told you I'd mail the license. I didn't. There's no record anywhere. Legally, you're my ex-girlfriend who lived in my apartment."

My apartment. The apartment I had paid for with the money from selling my mother's house after she died, three hundred and twelve thousand dollars that became Halecrest's seed funding. In this kitchen I had written the first four thousand lines of the algorithm while he pitched it to men in Patagonia vests.

"I built that company with you," I whispered.

"You helped," he corrected. "And fifty thousand is generous for help. Sign tonight. My lawyer picks it up at eight."

I stood up so fast my chair scraped the floor. I grabbed the papers and tore them in half.

Grayson was on his feet in a second. He caught my wrist and twisted until the pieces fell, then shoved me backward. My hip slammed into the edge of the counter. Pain shot white through me, and my hand flew to my stomach before I could think.

He didn't notice. He never noticed anything about me.

"Don't be hysterical," he said, straightening his cuffs. "It's embarrassing. There's another copy in my car."

His phone buzzed. He glanced at the screen and his whole face softened, the way it used to soften for me.

"I have to go. Sloane's waiting." He picked up his keys and stopped at the door. "Oh, and Wren? I gave her the ring."

My blood went cold.

"My mother's ring?"

"It was sitting in a drawer. Sloane loves vintage." He smiled. "Be out by Friday."

The door clicked shut.

I slid down the cabinet until I was sitting on the cold tile. I kept one hand pressed over my stomach and waited for the tears.

They didn't come.

Twenty minutes later my phone lit up with an Instagram notification. Sloane Whitmore had posted a photo: her slim, tan hand resting on Grayson's chest, and on her finger, my mother's 1962 Art Deco sapphire. My mother wore it every day for forty years, and she was wearing it when she told me, never let a man make you small, baby.

The caption read: He asked. I said yes.

Four thousand likes in twenty minutes.

I put the phone down. My hands had stopped shaking, which scared me more than the shaking had.

Grayson was right about one thing. He had never mailed our marriage license.

Three years ago I found it in the glove box of his car, two weeks after the ceremony, soft and creased under a parking ticket. He'd laughed it off. I'll do it Monday, babe.

He didn't do it Monday.

So I drove it to the county recorder myself and paid the filing fee with my own debit card. Then I forgot about it, because I trusted him.

I opened my laptop and searched my old email. County Recorder. Confirmation.

One result.

I clicked it, and for the first time all night, I smiled.
