His Ruthless Redemption: The Surrogate's HeartCh. 1 of 14

Chapter 1

Three years ago, I sold my womb to save my dying sister. Today, the billionaire who bought it just married the woman who stole my baby—and made me serve champagne at their wedding.

My name is Clara Ashford. I was a surgical resident at Mount Sinai, top of my class, until my twin sister Lily was diagnosed with a rare bone marrow disorder. The treatment cost $1.2 million. Insurance covered nothing.

That's when the contract appeared. A surrogacy agreement with Dominic Hale, CEO of Hale Industries, a man whose net worth rivaled small nations. The terms were simple: carry his child, hand it over, walk away with the money. No contact. No claims. No exceptions.

I signed. I carried his daughter for nine months. I felt her kick, heard her heartbeat on the monitor, whispered to her every night. And when she was born, they took her from my arms before I could even count her fingers.

The money saved Lily. I went back to my residency. I told myself I'd made the right choice.

Then, six months ago, everything collapsed.

A malpractice lawsuit—fabricated, I later discovered—destroyed my medical career. My license was suspended pending investigation. My savings evaporated in legal fees. Lily's condition relapsed. I needed money, fast.

The only job I could find was at a catering company. And tonight, fate had placed me in the grand ballroom of the Hale Estate, carrying a silver tray of Moët through a crowd of five hundred guests, watching Dominic Hale slide a ring onto the finger of a woman named Vivienne Laurent.

She was stunning. Tall, raven-haired, draped in a custom Valentino gown. She held a toddler on her hip—a little girl with my eyes.

My daughter. My Rosie.

I knew I shouldn't stare. But I couldn't stop. The child had my exact shade of green eyes, my dimples, the same tiny birthmark behind her left ear that I'd memorized in the thirty seconds I'd held her before they ripped her away.

Vivienne caught me looking.

"You," she said, loud enough for the nearest guests to hear. "The help isn't supposed to make eye contact. Didn't they train you?"

I lowered my gaze. My hands were shaking. Champagne sloshed over the rim of a glass.

Dominic appeared at her side. He was exactly as I remembered—sharp jaw, cold grey eyes, the kind of face that belonged on magazine covers and warning labels. He glanced at me without a flicker of recognition.

Of course he didn't recognize me. To him, I was a vessel. A transaction. He'd never even been in the room during the appointments.

"Is there a problem?" he asked Vivienne.

"This waitress was staring at Rosie. It's creepy."

He looked at me then, really looked. "Do I know you?"

"No, sir," I whispered.

"Then do your job or leave."

I turned to go. But Rosie—my Rosie—reached out her small hand and grabbed my sleeve. "Mama," she said.

The ballroom went quiet.

Vivienne's face twisted. Dominic froze. Five hundred pairs of eyes locked onto me.

"What did she just say?" Vivienne's voice was a blade.

Rosie said it again, louder. "Mama!"

Dominic stepped forward, his expression darkening. "Who the hell are you?"

Before I could answer, Vivienne snatched Rosie away and slapped me across the face. The crack echoed off the marble walls.

"Security," Dominic said coldly. "Get her out."

Two men grabbed my arms. As they dragged me toward the service exit, I heard Rosie screaming. The sound split my chest open.

At the door, Dominic caught up. He grabbed my chin, forcing me to look at him. "If I ever see you near my daughter again, I will bury you. Do you understand?"

I met his eyes. "She's not yours. She's mine."

His grip tightened. "What did you say?"

"I said she's mine. I'm the surrogate. And that woman you just married has never carried a child in her life."

Something flickered across his face—shock, confusion, fury. Then it was gone, replaced by stone.

"Throw her out," he said. "And make sure she never works in this city again."
