Chapter 1
The night I went into labor three weeks early, my husband was in our bed—with my sister.
I drove myself to the hospital, bleeding through my dress, while his phone went straight to voicemail.
Fourteen hours of labor. Forty-one stitches. A baby boy with lungs like a siren.
And when Marcus finally walked into my recovery room the next morning, he smelled like her perfume—the custom blend I'd created for her twenty-fifth birthday.
He kissed my forehead and whispered, "Sorry, angel. Red-eye from Chicago got delayed."
There was no red-eye. There was no Chicago.
I knew because the doorbell camera had sent a notification to my phone at 11:47 PM—my husband carrying my sister, Vanessa, across the threshold of the home I had built, brick by brick, with the empire I had inherited from my mother.
I watched the footage while the nurses stitched me up. I watched him carry her to our bedroom. I watched the lights go out.
And I felt something snap inside me—not my heart. Something colder. Something far more dangerous.
My name is Elena Sinclair. I am the sole heir to the Sinclair Group, a two-hundred-billion-dollar conglomerate that owns the ports, the patents, and half the politicians on the Eastern Seaboard. My mother built it from a single shipping container. I turned it into a dynasty.
Marcus Cole was a mid-level marketing director when I met him. Charming, beautiful, and completely, utterly broke. I married him because he made me laugh and because he looked at me like I was the only woman alive.
I gave him a VP title, a black card, and access to accounts he couldn't comprehend.
He gave me chlamydia six months into our marriage. I found out at my first prenatal screening.
I forgave him. He said it was from before we met. I believed him because I wanted to.
But this—my sister, in my bed, while I was hemorrhaging in a hospital forty minutes away—this was the end.
The nurse came in to check my vitals.
"Mrs. Cole, your blood pressure is dangerously high. You need to rest."
I smiled at her.
"It's Ms. Sinclair. And my blood pressure is about to be everyone else's problem."
I picked up my phone and called my chief legal counsel.
"David, I need you to do three things. Freeze every account with Marcus Cole's name on it. Pull his access to Sinclair Group systems. And get me the guest list for the Met Gala next Saturday."
A pause.
"Elena, you just gave birth four hours ago."
"I know. That's why I need the guest list. I want every camera in that room pointed at me when I destroy him."
