Chapter 1

On the night of our third wedding anniversary, my husband Carter Blackwell whispered another woman's name while making love to me.

That woman was my sister.

"Sienna... Sienna..."

His eyes were closed, his hands gripping my waist, and for the first time, I understood why he always insisted on turning off the lights.

I wasn't Madeline Ashford to him. I was never Madeline. I was a stand-in for my half-sister, Sienna Ashford—the woman who rejected him five years ago.

My name is Madeline Ashford. Second daughter of the Ashford dynasty. The "lesser" daughter—born from my father's first marriage, raised by nannies while my stepmother poured everything into Sienna.

When Carter proposed, my family celebrated. The Blackwell empire merging with the Ashfords was the deal of the century. But Carter hadn't wanted me. He wanted Sienna.

Sienna refused. She had bigger ambitions—a European aristocrat, old money, a title.

So my stepmother offered me instead.

"Madeline looks enough like Sienna. He'll never know the difference."

I knew the truth from the beginning. I married him anyway because I was stupid enough to believe I could make him love me for me.

For three years, I tried. I learned to cook his favorite meals. I memorized his schedule. I stayed up waiting for him every night, even when he came home at 3 a.m. smelling of whiskey.

I gave him everything—my time, my dignity, my heart.

He gave me a black card and empty rooms.

Now, lying beneath him, hearing my sister's name fall from his lips like a prayer, something inside me finally cracked.

I pushed him off.

"What's wrong?" He opened his eyes, annoyed.

I turned on the bedside lamp. His pupils contracted in the sudden light.

"Say my name," I said.

"What?"

"Say. My. Name."

He stared at me. One second. Two seconds. Five.

He couldn't say it. He literally could not remember his wife's name in this moment.

"Madeline," he finally said, but it came out mechanical, corrected—like a student caught cheating on a test.

I smiled. The kind of smile that comes when something inside you dies quietly.

"Happy anniversary, Carter."

I got dressed, walked to the guest room, and locked the door.

That night, I didn't cry. I was done crying for Carter Blackwell.

I opened my phone and saw a message from an unknown number.

"If you want to know what your husband does every Tuesday and Thursday night, check Suite 1208 at The Meridian Hotel. —A friend."

My hands trembled.

Every Tuesday and Thursday, Carter told me he had late meetings.

Tomorrow was Thursday.
