Chapter 3

Tuesday morning arrived, and with it, the most important day of my daughter's life.

I dressed Lily in her favorite pink pajamas with little stars on them, the ones she called her "brave outfit." She clutched her stuffed bunny as I carried her to the car.

"Mommy, will the doctors make my heart strong?" she asked, her voice so small it barely filled the car.

"Yes, baby. After today, you'll be able to run and play like all the other kids."

She smiled — a weak, trusting, beautiful smile that made my chest ache.

At the hospital — my hospital, though no one in that car knew it — I carried Lily through the private entrance. My assistant Claire had arranged everything under a pseudonym so no one would connect me to Aevitas yet.

Dr. Harrison, the best pediatric cardiac surgeon in the country, was already prepping. I had personally recruited him three years ago.

"Mrs. Mitchell," he greeted me with a knowing look. Only he and Claire knew who I really was. "Everything is ready. Lily is in excellent hands."

Ryan hadn't come.

He said he had an "important meeting" that couldn't be rescheduled.

His mother's words echoed in my head: "If God wants her dead, let her die."

I kissed Lily's forehead as the nurses wheeled her toward the operating room.

"I love you more than anything in this world," I whispered.

"I love you more, Mommy."

The doors closed, and I sat down in the waiting room, alone.

For four hours, I sat there. No one from Ryan's family called. Not once.

At hour three, I received a text from Madison: "Hey, can you transfer $3,000? I saw this amazing bag and it's limited edition. Thx!"

I stared at the message while my daughter was on an operating table with her chest cut open.

I deleted it.

At 2:47 PM, Dr. Harrison walked out, pulling off his surgical cap.

"Surgery was a success," he said. "Lily's heart is strong. She'll need recovery time, but she's going to live a full, healthy life."

I collapsed into the chair and sobbed — deep, shaking sobs that I had held in for months. Years.

My baby was going to be okay.

When I finally composed myself, I checked my phone. Ryan had sent one text, three hours ago:

"How'd it go? Also, can you pick up my dry cleaning? The gray suit. I need it for the gala on Friday."

I typed back: "Surgery was successful. Your daughter will live."

His response came twenty minutes later:

"Great. Don't forget the dry cleaning."

I put the phone down and looked at the ceiling.

Friday. The gala. The reveal.

Three more days.

I spent the rest of the week at Lily's bedside. She recovered faster than expected — laughing, eating, asking to watch cartoons. Dr. Harrison said she was a fighter.

Ryan visited once. He brought flowers — not for Lily, but because Vanessa had told him it would "look bad" if he didn't show up at all.

He stayed for eleven minutes. I counted.

"She looks fine," he said, glancing at his watch. "See? You were worried for nothing."

"She had open-heart surgery, Ryan."

"And she's fine now. So can we move on? I need you home tomorrow to help Mom prepare for the gala. She wants to wear that red dress, and it needs alterations. You're good with a needle."

I looked at him — really looked at him — and wondered how I had ever loved this man.

"I'll be home tomorrow," I said.

He left without saying goodbye to Lily.

Thursday night, I sat in Lily's hospital room after she fell asleep and opened my laptop.

Claire had sent the final preparations for the gala:

I also reviewed the acquisition documents. The silent buyout of Ryan's company, Harrison & Wells Consulting, had been completed two days ago. The employees didn't know yet. The announcement would come Monday.

But first, the gala.

Claire had one final question: "What are you wearing?"

I smiled and typed: "The Valentino. The black one."

"The one from the Met Gala collection?! That's a $45,000 dress!"

"Bill it to my personal account."

Tomorrow night, Ryan would walk into that gala with his mistress on his arm, thinking he was the most important man in the room.

And then, in front of everyone he had ever tried to impress — his boss, his colleagues, the media —

He would discover that the wife he treated like a servant was the woman who owned it all.

Including him.
