Chapter 1

The paper smelled like expensive ink and cheap betrayal.

My father slid the marriage contract across the marble desk like he was handing me a crown. Like he wasn’t handing me a cage.

“Sign, Lena,” Victor Hart said, voice smooth as polished stone. “The Moretti family is offering us protection. A seat at their table. You’ll be… honored.”

Honored.

In my last life, I wore diamonds that felt like shackles and smiled until my jaw ached. I learned which fork to use and which sentence to swallow. I learned how to stand beside a man who ruled the city’s shadows with a cold, quiet hand—and still managed to make me feel smaller than a cigarette ash.

Adrian Moretti.

The Don.

He never raised his voice. He didn’t need to. His silence was a gun on the table. His rules were bullets you couldn’t dodge.

No clubs. No “friends” he hadn’t vetted. No clothing that drew eyes. No laughing too loud. No dancing. No being… me.

The day the mansion burned, I thought fire was finally merciful.

But death didn’t keep me.

I opened my eyes and I was here again—back in Victor’s office, back under the chandelier, back to the moment where my whole future was supposed to be decided by a signature.

My hands didn’t shake this time.

I picked up the pen.

And I wrote a name that wasn’t mine.

Chloe Hart.

My half-sister.

My father stared like I’d slapped him. Then his face brightened—too quickly, too greedily—like a man watching a debt disappear.

“You’re… giving it to Chloe?” he asked, barely holding back excitement.

“I’m giving you what you’ve always wanted,” I said. “A daughter you can sell without guilt.”

His smile twitched.

He recovered fast. “Chloe is… refined. She understands tradition. She’ll make the perfect Donna.”

“Good,” I said. “Then she can kneel beautifully.”

Victor’s eyes hardened. “Watch your mouth.”

I leaned forward, voice low and flat. “In the last ten years, you spent millions keeping your mistress comfortable. You bought Chloe private tutors, ballet lessons, etiquette coaches. You bought her a future.”

He opened his mouth.

I didn’t let him speak.

“You bought me nothing,” I finished. “So here’s the price for my silence.”

His eyebrows lifted. “Name it.”

“Fifty million.”

He laughed once, sharp and delighted. “You really are my daughter.”

No, I thought.

I’m the daughter you never deserved.

Victor stood, already reaching for his phone. “I’ll transfer it now. Adrian will be pleased.”

Adrian will be pleased.

The idea made my stomach go cold.

Because I remembered his eyes the day he realized I wasn’t the woman he wanted.

Not pain.

Not love.

Just possession… disturbed.

I watched Victor pocket the contract like it was a winning lottery ticket and leave the office in a hurry.

The second the door shut, the air returned to my lungs.

I walked to the mirror.

Red lipstick. Dark eyes. A pulse that sounded like a countdown.

I touched my throat where, in another life, a diamond collar had rested.

“This time,” I whispered to my reflection, “I choose myself.”

Upstairs, I pulled on a short black dress Victor would’ve called indecent and Adrian would’ve called unforgivable. I packed a small suitcase. Passport. Cash. Burner phone.

Then I went out into the night like it was mine.

The city’s bass thumped through my bones as I stepped into Eden, the hottest club downtown. Lights cut through smoke. Bodies moved like nobody owed anyone obedience.

I threw a stack of bills onto the bar.

“Bring me your best whiskey,” I told the bartender. “And don’t ask questions.”

He stared at me like I’d walked in carrying a bomb. “Miss Hart… everyone knows you’re marrying Moretti. If he finds you here—”

“I’m not marrying anyone,” I said. “Not in this life.”

I lifted the glass. The burn was freedom.

And then—behind me—music split open with a voice colder than the ice in my drink.

“Turn around, Lena.”

My spine locked.

Because I knew that voice.

I turned slowly.

Adrian Moretti stood at the entrance with a wall of men behind him—black suits, dead eyes, hands near guns.

His gaze found me.

And the entire club felt like it stopped breathing.
