Chapter 1

The pregnancy test was positive, my boyfriend of three years was in bed with my stepsister, and the eviction notice on my door gave me seventy-two hours — all before breakfast on a Monday.

I stood in the hallway of my crumbling apartment building, the thin plastic stick still in my trembling hand, listening to the rhythmic creak of bedsprings and Emma's theatrical moaning through the door I'd just opened and quietly closed. Ryan hadn't even noticed me. He was too busy with his face buried between my stepsister's thighs on the sheets I'd bought with my last paycheck.

I didn't scream. I didn't cry. Something inside me simply — clicked off.

I placed the pregnancy test on the doormat like a goodbye note, picked up my bag, and walked down four flights of stairs into the grey Chicago morning.

My phone buzzed. A text from my stepmother, Helen.

Your father's will reading is today at 10. Don't bother coming. There's nothing for you. There never was.

I almost laughed. My father — billionaire tech mogul Richard Ashford — had died two weeks ago, and his second wife had already made sure I was erased from every document, every photo, every memory. To the world, Richard Ashford had one daughter: Emma. The golden child. The legitimate one.

Nobody knew about me. Nobody except my father's lawyer.

At 10:07 AM, I walked into the glass-walled offices of Morrison & Associates, still wearing yesterday's clothes, still carrying the faint smell of betrayal on my skin. Helen was already seated, draped in black Chanel, dabbing dry eyes with a monogrammed handkerchief. Emma sat beside her, freshly showered — I could still smell Ryan's cologne on her from across the room.

They both looked up when I entered. Helen's expression curdled like old milk.

"What is she doing here?" Helen hissed at the lawyer.

Arthur Morrison, a man who looked like he'd been carved from old oak, adjusted his glasses and cleared his throat.

"She's here because Richard requested it." He opened a leather folder. "And because she inherits everything."

The silence that followed was so complete I could hear Helen's pearl necklace shift against her collarbone.

"That's impossible," Emma whispered.

Arthur continued reading as if he hadn't heard her. "The entire Ashford estate — controlling shares of Ashford Technologies, all real estate holdings, liquid assets totaling approximately 4.2 billion dollars — passes to his biological daughter, Olivia Ashford. With one condition."

Every eye in the room turned to me.

I swallowed. "What condition?"

Arthur looked at me over his glasses, and for the first time, I saw something like sympathy in his ancient eyes.

"You must be legally married within thirty days."

Helen's gasp was sharp enough to cut glass. Emma's chair scraped backward. But I barely heard them, because my mind was already spinning, already calculating, already doing what it had always done when the world tried to crush me — surviving.

Married. In thirty days. While pregnant with the baby of a man who was sleeping with my stepsister.

Arthur slid a second document across the table. "Your father anticipated this might be... challenging. He left a suggestion." He paused. "A name."

I looked down at the paper. One name, written in my father's familiar handwriting.

Dominic Cavallo.

My blood turned to ice.

Everyone in Chicago knew that name. CEO of Cavallo Industries. The coldest, most ruthless billionaire on the Eastern Seaboard. A man who had never been photographed smiling. A man who had reportedly made a rival CEO cry in a boardroom and then bought his company before lunch.

A man who, according to every gossip column in the country, despised marriage.

"He's expecting your call," Arthur said quietly.

I stared at the name until the letters blurred, my hand instinctively moving to my stomach — to the secret growing inside me that no one in this room knew about.

I was about to sell my life to a stranger to claim a fortune I never wanted, carrying a baby that belonged to a man who never deserved me.

And the most terrifying part? I was going to do it.
