Chapter 3

The first strike came within two weeks. MeraPay's integration with Archer Holdings' existing client base was seamless — I'd designed it that way. Within days, three of Carter Financial's mid-tier institutional clients quietly requested meetings with Archer's team.

They weren't switching yet. But they were looking. In the financial world, looking was the first crack in the wall.

Ryan wouldn't notice yet. These were smaller accounts, beneath his personal attention. But I knew the pattern.

Mid-tier clients talk to top-tier clients. Whispers become conversations. Conversations become migrations. I had time. And I was patient.

What I wasn't prepared for was seeing him. It happened at the Financial Innovation Summit, a black-tie industry event at the Waldorf Astoria. Every major player in New York finance would be there.

I almost didn't go. Jess convinced me. "You're a CEO now, Mara. You belong in that room more than half the people in it." She was right.

So I put on a midnight-blue gown — simple, elegant, nothing like the demure pastels Ryan used to pick out for me — and walked in.

The room was a sea of tuxedos and diamonds. I recognized faces from magazine covers, from the dinner parties I used to attend as Ryan's silent, smiling accessory. Nobody recognized me.

I was talking to a group of venture capitalists about digital payment infrastructure when I felt it — that prickle at the back of my neck. I turned.

Ryan was across the room, a champagne flute in his hand, Victoria Lane draped on his arm like an ornament. She was beautiful, polished, everything I wasn't — or everything he'd told me I wasn't.

He was laughing at something, his head thrown back, that confident, careless laugh I used to love. Then his gaze swept the room and landed on me.

He didn't recognize me. Not immediately. His eyes passed over me, then snapped back.

I watched the confusion, the slow dawn of recognition, the shock. I held his gaze for exactly three seconds. Then I turned back to my conversation and smiled.

I felt him approaching before I heard him. "Mara?" His voice was controlled, but I caught the edge beneath it. "What are you doing here?"

I turned, my expression politely neutral. "Ryan. Hello."

He looked me over, taking in the gown, the confidence, the name badge that read: Mara Chen — CEO, Digital Payments Division, Archer Holdings.

The color drained from his face. "You're the new—" He stopped. Reset. That Wall Street mask sliding back into place. "I didn't know you were in finance."

"There's a lot you didn't know about me."

Victoria appeared at his elbow, her smile perfectly calibrated. "Ryan, darling, who's this?"

A beat of silence. Ryan's jaw tightened. "This is Mara. My... ex-wife."

Victoria's eyes widened almost imperceptibly. She recovered fast — old money always does. "Oh. How lovely to meet you."

"Likewise," I said. "That's a beautiful necklace."

It was my anniversary necklace. The one Ryan had given me for our second year. The one I'd last seen around Victoria's neck the day I signed the divorce papers.

Victoria touched it instinctively. Ryan went rigid. "Thank you," Victoria said, oblivious. "Ryan has wonderful taste."

"He does," I said. "In necklaces."

I excused myself before Ryan could respond. I didn't look back. I didn't need to.

I could feel his eyes burning into my back as I walked away.

At the bar, Daniel Archer appeared beside me. "Interesting conversation over there," he said mildly, ordering a scotch. "Old friend?"

"Old mistake," I said.

Daniel studied me for a moment, then nodded. "We all have those. The important thing is what we build after." He clinked his glass against mine. "To building," he said.

"To building."

That night, back in my Tribeca apartment, I kicked off my heels and stood at the window. The city glittered below, indifferent and beautiful.

My phone lit up. A text from Ryan. "We need to talk. Tomorrow. My office. 9 AM."

No please. No question mark. Still giving orders.

I typed back: "I don't work for you anymore, Ryan. If you want a meeting, have your assistant call mine."

Three dots appeared. Disappeared. Appeared again. Then: "Who the hell are you?"

I set the phone down and poured myself a glass of wine. He was about to find out.
