Chapter 3

The morning after the gala, I found an envelope slid under my bedroom door. Inside was a single photograph—me and Easton on the dance floor, his hand on my waist, my head tilted back in laughter at something he'd said. From certain angles, it looked intimate. Romantic.

On the back, in elegant feminine handwriting: "Know your place, or I'll show Roman exactly what kind of wife he married."

No signature. None needed.

I was still staring at the photo when my phone rang. The hospital.

"Miss Holloway, I'm afraid there's been a complication with your father's treatment. His specialist has been reassigned, and the new attending physician is recommending a different protocol—one that isn't covered under your current payment arrangement."

My blood went cold. "Reassigned? By whom?"

"I'm not at liberty to say. But the new protocol requires an additional deposit of two hundred thousand dollars by Friday, or your father will be transferred to general care."

General care. Where patients without money went to wait. Where the survival rate for his condition dropped by forty percent.

I found Victoria Blackwell in the estate's sunroom, sipping Earl Grey from bone china while reviewing seating charts for her next event. She looked up with manufactured surprise when I walked in.

"Iris. What a pleasant—"

"What did you do to my father's medical care?"

Her teacup paused halfway to her lips. "I'm sure I don't know what you mean."

"His specialist was reassigned overnight. Someone with enough influence to rearrange a hospital's staff in hours." I placed the photograph on the table between us. "Was this before or after you had someone take this?"

Victoria set down her cup with deliberate precision. "Sit down, Iris."

"I'd rather stand."

"Sit. Down." Her voice could have frozen the sun.

I sat.

"Let me be very clear about your situation," Victoria said, each word polished like a weapon. "You are a temporary inconvenience—a nobody from nowhere who stumbled into a contract she doesn't understand. My son needed a bride on paper. You needed money. The transaction is simple."

"Then why are you threatening my father?"

"Because you seem to have forgotten the terms." She leaned forward. "You smile for cameras. You attend events. You play the dutiful wife. And you stay away from Easton."

"I'm not interested in Easton."

"I don't care what you're interested in. I care what it looks like." She tapped the photograph. "This looks like a woman positioning herself to trade up from the broken brother to the whole one. And I won't allow it."

The cruelty was so casual, so practiced, that I realized this wasn't new for her. Victoria Blackwell had been managing threats and protecting her empire long before I'd entered the picture.

"If you touch my father's care again," I said, my voice shaking but clear, "I will go to every tabloid in this city and tell them exactly what kind of family the Blackwells really are."

Victoria smiled. "And who would believe you? A desperate girl from a bankrupt family, making wild accusations against one of the most respected names in the country?" She stood, smoothing her skirt. "Know your enemies, dear. I've been playing this game since before you were born."

She left me sitting in that sunroom, surrounded by fresh flowers and morning light, feeling more trapped than I had on my wedding day.

That evening, I did something I'd never done before. I knocked on Roman's study door and waited.

"Enter."

He was at his desk as always, but this time I noticed details I'd missed before—the way his left hand gripped the armrest of his wheelchair with white knuckles, the slight tremor in his fingers, the bottle of prescription medication half-hidden behind a stack of books.

"Your mother threatened my father," I said without preamble. "She had his specialist reassigned and is demanding two hundred thousand dollars I don't have, or he gets transferred to a ward where he'll die."

Roman's expression didn't change, but something in the air shifted—a sudden, dangerous stillness, like the moment before lightning strikes.

"Sit down," he said. Not a command. An invitation.

I sat in the leather chair across from his desk, and for the first time since our wedding, Roman Blackwell looked at me—truly looked at me—as if seeing me for the first time.

"Tell me everything," he said quietly.

So I did. The contract my stepmother had signed. The gambling debts. My father's illness. Victoria's photograph. Every humiliating detail of how I'd ended up in this gilded cage, married to a man I didn't know, at the mercy of a family that saw me as disposable.

When I finished, the silence lasted so long I thought he'd fallen asleep. Then he picked up his phone.

"Dr. Reinhardt," he said, his voice carrying an authority that made the air vibrate. "My wife's father is a patient at Mercy General. His specialist was reassigned without authorization. You will restore the original care team within the hour, add a secondary specialist of my choosing, and upgrade his room to the private wing. Bill everything to my personal account. Not the family trust. Mine."

He hung up without waiting for a response.

"Roman, I—"

"My mother won't touch your father again," he said, and the certainty in his voice wasn't arrogance. It was a promise, delivered with the weight of a man who understood exactly what it meant to be at someone else's mercy.

"Why?" I whispered. "Why would you help me?"

He turned his wheelchair toward the window, his scarred profile silhouetted against the city lights. When he finally spoke, his voice was so low I had to lean forward to hear it.

"Because I know what it's like to have the people who are supposed to protect you become the ones you need protection from."

The words hung between us, heavy with a history I was only beginning to understand. And for the first time since I'd walked down that aisle toward the wrong brother, I wondered if maybe—just maybe—I'd ended up exactly where I was supposed to be.
