Chapter 1

On the night of my fifth wedding anniversary, I found my husband in bed with my best friend — and heard them laughing about how I'd signed away my entire tech empire without ever reading the fine print.

I stood outside the master bedroom of the penthouse I'd purchased, my hand frozen on the door handle, listening to every word through the gap.

"Relax, Jess," my husband Ethan Cross murmured between kisses. "Claire's so stupidly in love with me she'd sign her own death certificate if I slid it across the breakfast table with a smile."

Jessica Hale — the woman I'd pulled out of a homeless shelter three years ago, funded through business school, and appointed as CFO of my company — giggled against his chest. "But what if she finds out about the equity transfers? You've moved forty percent of Hale Technologies into shell companies under your name. If she audits the books—"

"She won't." Ethan's voice was ice wrapped in silk. "I've been playing the devoted husband for five years. Every morning I kiss her forehead. Every night I tell her she's the most brilliant woman I've ever met. She thinks I'm her biggest cheerleader." He snorted. "The truth? Her face makes me sick. Her voice makes me sick. But her net worth? That I can stomach."

My nails bit into my palms hard enough to draw blood.

Jessica sighed dreamily. "Once we drain the remaining sixty percent and tank the stock price, we'll acquire the wreckage through our offshore entity. She'll have nothing."

"Nothing," Ethan confirmed. "And the prenup she insisted on? I made sure my lawyer inserted a clause she never caught — any assets 'gifted' during the marriage are irrevocable. Every transfer she approved? Legally airtight."

Jessica propped herself up on one elbow. "What about the divorce? She could still take half."

"Half of what?" Ethan laughed. "By the time I file, there won't be anything left to split. She'll be too humiliated to fight. Claire's weakness has always been her pride. One public betrayal and she'll crawl into a hole and disappear."

My jaw tightened. Five years. Five years of candlelit dinners, weekend getaways, whispered promises in the dark — all engineered to keep me blind while they hollowed out my life's work from the inside.

I had built Hale Technologies from a garage startup into a $2.3 billion empire. I had cured my loneliness by trusting Ethan with my heart and Jessica with my company.

Now I understood the cost of that trust.

But they'd miscalculated one thing. I didn't become a billionaire by being stupid. I became one by being patient.

I released the door handle without a sound, walked to the guest bedroom, and sat on the edge of the bed in perfect stillness.

No tears. No trembling.

Just math.

I had six months before their plan reached completion. Six months to dismantle them so thoroughly they'd wish they'd never learned my name.

I pulled out my phone and texted one word to a number I hadn't used in years.

"Begin."

The reply came in three seconds.

"Took you long enough, boss."

I smiled in the dark.
