Chapter 2

The next morning, Richard acted as if nothing had happened. That was his specialty—erasing inconvenient conversations, filing them away under "Vivienne's emotional episodes." He stood in the kitchen in his tailored Tom Ford suit, pouring coffee into his travel mug, scrolling through emails.

"I'll be late tonight," he said without looking up. "Board prep."

"Board prep," I repeated. The quarterly board meeting wasn't for three weeks. I knew because I still received the calendar notifications—an oversight Richard's IT team hadn't caught.

"Mm-hm." He grabbed his keys and paused at the door, almost as an afterthought. "Oh—Amber's organizing a team dinner Friday. She suggested you come. Might be good for you to get out of the house."

The invitation was a leash disguised as kindness. Show up, play the dutiful wife, smile while Amber sat at the seat I used to occupy. I'd done it before. Every company event for the past year had been orchestrated by Amber, who made sure to seat me at the far end of the table while she perched next to Richard, whispering in his ear, touching his arm.

"I'll think about it," I said.

The moment his Porsche pulled out of the garage, I called Diana.

"The prenup," I said. "Walk me through it again."

Diana's voice was calm, precise. "The original prenup, which Richard signed, states that in the event of divorce due to infidelity, the injured party retains seventy percent of all marital assets, including shares in any jointly developed business ventures."

"And Richard's version?"

"The copy his lawyer has on file was... altered. Key clauses were softened. But I have the original, notarized and witnessed, locked in my vault. It's ironclad, Vivienne."

I exhaled slowly. Three years ago, when the first rumors about Amber surfaced, I'd quietly secured my position. Not out of suspicion—out of survival. My mother taught me that before she died: Hope for the best, but always have a paper trail.

"There's more," Diana continued. "Your forensic accountant flagged seventeen transactions over the past eighteen months—company funds transferred to a personal account under the name 'A. Noel Holdings.' Total amount: $2.3 million."

My blood ran cold. Not because of the money—but because of the brazenness. He was funding her lifestyle with the company I'd built.

"Can we prove it?"

"Already documented. Wire transfers, account statements, his digital signature on every one."

I closed my eyes, pressing my fingers to my temples. Five years. Five years of love, sacrifice, and blind trust, and this was what it amounted to—a husband who saw me as furniture and a secretary who was spending my money.

"One more thing," Diana said. "I looked into the Cartier necklace. It wasn't purchased through corporate accounts. It was bought with funds from the joint savings account—the one designated for your fertility treatments."

The silence that followed was deafening. He'd taken the money meant for the child we were supposed to have together and draped it around another woman's neck.

That evening, I attended a charity gala alone—one hosted by the Harrington Foundation, old money with deep ties to every major firm in the city. I wore a red Valentino gown I'd been saving for a special occasion. Tonight felt appropriate.

Midway through the event, I spotted Richard across the room. He wasn't supposed to be here—he'd said board prep. But there he was, champagne in hand, with Amber glued to his side in a black dress that left little to the imagination.

They hadn't seen me yet. I watched as he leaned in to whisper something that made her laugh, his hand resting on the small of her back.

Then Amber looked up, and our eyes met across the crowded room. For a moment, something flickered in her expression—surprise, maybe even fear. But it vanished quickly, replaced by a slow, deliberate smile. She raised her champagne glass in my direction, a silent toast.

I smiled back, lifted my own glass, and mouthed two words she couldn't possibly understand yet: "You're welcome."
