Chapter 3

Thursday morning. The Grand Meridian Hotel ballroom was packed with journalists, industry leaders, and financial analysts. The mysterious CEO of Ashworth Empire — who had never made a public appearance — had finally announced a press conference, and all of New York was watching.

Behind the stage curtain, Seraphina adjusted her blazer. The woman in the mirror was unrecognizable from the quiet, invisible wife who had haunted the Sterling mansion. Her dark hair was swept into a sleek chignon. Her fitted ivory suit was from Ashworth's own fashion line — unreleased, worth more than most people's annual salary. Diamond studs caught the light at her ears.

"Ma'am, we're live in two minutes," Elliot said. "Every major outlet is here. Financial Times, Bloomberg, CNBC — and several Sterling Group board members in the audience."

Seraphina's pulse quickened, but her face remained calm. "Good. Let them watch."

She stepped onto the stage.

Camera flashes erupted like lightning. The murmur of the crowd swelled, then hushed as Seraphina approached the podium.

"Good morning. My name is Seraphina Cole, and I am the founder and CEO of Ashworth Empire."

The room exploded.

Journalists surged forward. Questions overlapped in a deafening roar. On the massive screen behind her, Ashworth Empire's portfolio unfolded — tech subsidiaries, pharmaceutical divisions, luxury brands, real estate holdings across four continents.

"For personal reasons, I chose to remain anonymous for the past several years," Seraphina continued, her voice cutting through the chaos with surgical precision. "That changes today. Ashworth Empire will be entering a new phase of public expansion, beginning with several strategic acquisitions in the New York market."

She paused, letting the implication settle.

A Bloomberg reporter shouted, "Ms. Cole, there are rumors that Ashworth has been quietly buying shares in Sterling Group. Can you confirm?"

Seraphina smiled. "I can confirm that Ashworth Empire has acquired a significant stake in Sterling Group. Further details will be disclosed in due course."

The room erupted again. Sterling Group's stock, already fragile, would nosedive the moment this broadcast aired.

Across the city, in the Sterling Group headquarters, Damien was mid-meeting when his CFO burst through the door, face white as paper.

"Turn on the news. Now."

Someone fumbled for the remote. The conference room's wall-mounted screen flickered to life, showing the Grand Meridian stage.

Damien froze.

There, standing at the podium in front of hundreds of cameras, was his ex-wife. The woman he had dismissed as ordinary. The woman he had replaced without a second thought.

"...Ashworth Empire has acquired a significant stake in Sterling Group..."

His coffee cup slipped from his fingers, shattering on the conference table. Dark liquid spread across the polished surface like a stain.

"That's... that's impossible," he whispered.

His CFO swallowed hard. "Sir, Ashworth's market cap is $40 billion. If she's really the CEO—"

"She can't be." Damien's voice was hoarse. "She's... she was just..."

Just what? Just his wife? Just the woman who cooked his meals and waited up for him and never once complained when he chose Vivienne over her?

His phone rang. The caller ID read: Ashworth Empire — CEO Office.

His hand trembled as he answered.

"Damien." Seraphina's voice was calm, professional, and completely devoid of the warmth she'd once reserved for him. "I believe we have a meeting scheduled for tomorrow morning. I look forward to discussing the future of Sterling Group."

A beat of silence.

"Oh, and one more thing — Vivienne's apartment? The building is owned by Ashworth Real Estate. Her lease expires next week. I won't be renewing it."

The line went dead.

Damien sat motionless, the phone still pressed to his ear, the dial tone humming like a funeral march.

Around the table, his executives exchanged horrified glances. The Sterling Group — his family's legacy, his empire — was now in the hands of the woman he had just discarded.

Vivienne chose that exact moment to call. Her voice was shrill with panic: "Damien! There are people at my door saying I have to move out! What's happening?!"

Damien couldn't answer. He couldn't even breathe.

On the TV screen, Seraphina was stepping away from the podium, cameras flashing around her like stars. She looked powerful. Untouchable. Radiant.

She looked like someone he had never truly seen before.

And for the first time in three years, Damien Sterling felt the cold, crushing weight of regret.
