Chapter 3

I told myself the ring meant nothing. Women buy themselves jewelry. It didn't have to mean what I thought it meant.

But my hands wouldn't stop shaking.

That afternoon, while the house was empty, I sat at the kitchen table with my laptop. The treatment Dr. Huang recommended — aggressive chemotherapy, possibly surgery — would cost more than most people earned in a lifetime. But the Valentis had money. My money, technically. When my grandmother died, she'd left me the deed to her brownstone in Brooklyn. I sold it three years into my marriage, depositing $400,000 into a joint account Dominic insisted we open. "Family money," he'd called it.

I logged into the account. The page loaded slowly, and I braced myself.

Balance: $0.00.

I stared. Blinked. Refreshed.

$0.00.

My fingers fumbled through the transaction history. One transfer, dated two weeks ago: $400,000 to Natalia Cortez, authorized by Dominic Valenti.

Four hundred thousand dollars. My grandmother's house. My only inheritance. Gone — transferred to the woman who threw away my osso buco and drank coffee from my mug while wearing my husband's shirt.

I called Dominic. He answered on the fourth ring. "What is it, Bella?"

"The joint account is empty. There was a transfer to Natalia—"

"I know."

"You know?" My voice cracked. "Dominic, that was my grandmother's money. I need it for treatment. The chemotherapy—"

"Natalia explained everything to me." His tone hardened. "She told me how you've been pressuring her for money, using some fake diagnosis to manipulate the family. It stops now, Isabella."

The room tilted. "Fake? I have the medical reports. I can show you—"

"Natalia told me you've been forging documents. Honestly, I didn't think you were capable of this kind of deception." Disgust dripped from every word. "We'll discuss it when I'm home. Don't call me again today."

The line went dead.

I sat motionless, phone pressed to my ear, listening to nothing. Outside, gardeners trimmed the hedges in perfect symmetry, unaware that inside, a woman's world had collapsed completely.

Eventually, I opened my email, found Dr. Huang's message about scheduling my first chemo session, and pressed Cancel Appointment.

A window appeared: Would you like to reschedule?

I closed the laptop.

That evening, Gianna found me in the garden, staring at the lemon tree I'd planted three years ago. It had finally begun to bear fruit — small, bright lemons nobody but me ever noticed.

"Isabella," she said. "Tomorrow is your seventh anniversary."

I looked at her, surprised she remembered.

"Dominic won't be celebrating," she continued. "He has business with Natalia. I suggest you don't make a scene."

"Gianna." I swallowed. "I'm not lying about the cancer. I'm really sick."

She regarded me the way one might regard an insect on a windowsill.

"My son's first wife was sick," she said quietly. "Really sick. And she never once complained. She died with dignity. Perhaps you could learn from her."

She turned and walked inside, leaving me alone with my lemon tree and the darkening sky.

I picked one of the lemons, holding it in my palm. Small, imperfect, and entirely mine — the only thing in this house I had grown without anyone's help or permission.

That night, I couldn't sleep. I stared at the ceiling, thinking about tomorrow. Our seventh anniversary. Seven years of silence, sacrifice, and slowly disappearing.

I could let it pass. I could be the ghost they wanted me to be.

Or I could try one last time.

I chose hope. Because that's what fools do.

I would prepare everything. The wedding china. The dress from our honeymoon. I would tell him the truth — all of it — and pray that somewhere beneath the ice, the man I'd married still existed.

Tomorrow would be my last stand.

What I didn't know — what I couldn't have known — was that tomorrow would also be the night I stopped being invisible. But not in the way I'd hoped.
