Chapter 3

The law office was in the most expensive building downtown—the kind of place where even the elevator had marble floors. I caught my reflection in the polished doors and almost didn't recognize myself.

Gaunt face. Dark circles so deep they looked like bruises. The cheap dress I was wearing had a tear along the hem and a bloodstain I'd tried to cover with my cardigan. My flats were falling apart—one sole was separating from the shoe entirely.

This was what three years as Ethan Ashford's wife had made me.

The receptionist's eyes widened when she saw me, but a sharp look from the attorney who greeted me shut down any reaction. "Ms. Moore, thank you for coming. I'm Catherine Chen. Please, follow me."

She led me to a private conference room where a thick file sat on the table. Beside it was a glass of water and a box of tissues—as if she already knew I'd need them.

Catherine sat across from me and folded her hands. "Ms. Moore, what I'm about to tell you will be difficult to hear. I need you to let me finish before you respond. Can you do that?"

I nodded. After everything I'd survived, I doubted anything could truly shock me anymore.

I was wrong.

"Your biological mother, Eleanor Sinclair, was the sole heir of the Sinclair family—one of the wealthiest dynasties on the East Coast. She disappeared twenty-six years ago under mysterious circumstances. Our firm has spent the last eight years tracking her lineage, and six months ago, DNA evidence confirmed that you are her only living child."

I stared at her. The words entered my ears but refused to assemble into meaning.

"The Sinclair estate has been held in trust, awaiting a verified heir. As of today, that heir is you." Catherine opened the file and slid a document toward me. "The current value of the estate, including properties, investments, and liquid assets, is approximately $4.7 billion."

The number floated in front of my eyes like a hallucination.

"That's not possible," I whispered.

"I assure you, it is." Catherine's voice was steady, almost gentle. "Your grandmother, Ruth Moore, was Eleanor's trusted confidante. When Eleanor realized she was in danger, she entrusted you to Ruth's care with explicit instructions to keep your identity hidden until you were safe."

"Safe from what?"

Catherine hesitated. "From the people who killed your mother."

The room tilted. I gripped the edge of the table.

"We believe your mother was murdered by individuals who wanted control of the Sinclair estate. Ruth kept you hidden and off the grid to protect you. She never accessed any Sinclair funds—she raised you entirely on her own, at great personal cost."

Grandma. My sweet, stubborn, proud Grandma, who worked three jobs until her body broke. Who insisted I study hard, who told me every night that I was "meant for more than this." Who died alone in a hospital bed because I couldn't afford her medicine.

She knew. She knew everything, and she suffered in silence to keep me alive.

"Why now?" My voice cracked. "Why are you telling me this now?"

"Because the trust's conditions have been met. You've turned twenty-five, and the DNA match is confirmed. The estate is legally yours, Ms. Moore. All of it."

Catherine pushed another document forward. "Additionally, the Sinclair family's holdings include a 15% controlling stake in Ashford Group."

I stopped breathing.

"I'm sorry—what did you just say?"

Catherine met my eyes. "Your mother's family was one of the original investors in Ashford Group. The Sinclairs hold the single largest individual stake. Whoever controls the Sinclair estate effectively holds veto power over every major decision the Ashford board makes."

She paused, letting that sink in.

"Ms. Moore, as of this moment, you are Ethan Ashford's most powerful shareholder."

I sat in that leather chair—broke, bleeding, freshly divorced—and felt something crack open inside my chest. Not grief. Not pain.

Something sharper. Something that had teeth.

Catherine slid a pen toward me. "Shall we proceed with the transfer?"

I picked up the pen.

My hand didn't shake.
