Chapter 3

The Meridian presentation was a disaster.

I watched it unfold from the bar of the Ritz-Carlton, where the tech conference was being live-streamed on a massive screen above the bartender's head.

Rowan stood on stage in his signature black turtleneck — a costume, really, designed to make him look like the visionary he wasn't. He had a clicker in his hand and confidence in his posture.

But the slides were wrong.

Without my rewrites, the presentation was a patchwork of jargon and empty buzzwords. The financial projections didn't align. The product roadmap contradicted the quarterly earnings. The algorithm demo — the centerpiece of the entire pitch — glitched on screen and displayed raw, unfinished code.

The audience murmured. An investor in the front row checked his watch.

Rowan froze. For the first time in his career, the teleprompter was blank, and the ghost behind the curtain was gone.

He fumbled through the rest. He ad-libbed. He sweated through his turtleneck.

The stock dropped four percent before he left the stage.

My phone buzzed. It was Helen.

Blackwell stock down 4.2%. Board is panicking. Your timing is impeccable.

I took a sip of my sparkling water and smiled.

That evening, I checked into a modest apartment I'd rented under my maiden name. Nora Chen. No Blackwell. No Mrs. Nobody.

I set up my laptop on the kitchen counter. I had three job offers already — two from Blackwell's competitors, and one from a venture capital firm that wanted to back my own startup.

My own startup.

The words tasted like oxygen after years of drowning.

I was reviewing term sheets when the doorbell rang.

I opened it.

Ivy stood there. My younger sister. Twenty-six. Blonde. Beautiful in the effortless way that had always made me feel like the rough draft to her final copy.

She was showing now. The bump was small but visible under her cashmere sweater.

"Can I come in?" she asked. Her voice was soft. Rehearsed.

"No."

"Nora, please. I didn't mean for this to happen."

"You didn't mean to sleep with my husband for seven months? What was it, an accident? Did you trip and fall onto him repeatedly?"

Her eyes watered. "You don't understand. Rowan and I have a connection. Something real. He said you two were basically roommates."

"We were business partners," I corrected. "I built his company. He took the credit. That's not a marriage — it's embezzlement."

"He says you're trying to destroy him. That you're filing some kind of lawsuit."

"I'm filing for what's mine."

"It's vindictive, Nora. Mom says—"

"Mom chose the man who's writing her checks," I cut in. "And you chose the man who was sleeping in my bed. Neither of you gets to lecture me on morality."

Ivy's lip quivered. She placed a hand on her belly — the universal shield.

"Think about the baby," she whispered.

"I am thinking about the baby," I said. "I'm thinking about what kind of man its father is. And I'm thinking that one day, that child will Google its parents and learn the truth."

Ivy flinched.

"Goodbye, Ivy."

I closed the door.

I stood in the hallway, my hand on the knob, waiting for the guilt. The sisterly obligation. The cultural programming that said family first, forgive, forget, be the bigger person.

It never came.

I felt clean.

I went back to my laptop and accepted the venture capital offer.

Then I pulled up the patent filings and highlighted every line of code that was mine.

It was time to build something new. Something with my name on it.

But first, I had to burn the old kingdom down.
