Chapter 1

The day I donated my kidney, my husband held another woman's hand in the next room and whispered, "Don't worry, baby. She has no idea it's for you."

I died on the operating table from surgical complications.

No one came to claim my body for three days.

My name was Elara Vaughn. I was twenty-seven years old, married for four years, and the most disposable person in my own family.

…

My soul jolted awake under the fluorescent morgue lights. The sheet over my face smelled of formaldehyde, and the tag on my toe read: Jane Doe — unclaimed.

Jane Doe. As if I'd never had a name at all.

I drifted upward through the ceiling, through two floors of sterile hallways, until I found him — my husband, Reid Vaughn — sitting at a hospital bedside with flowers in his arms.

But the bed wasn't empty in mourning for me.

Sienna Hale was propped against the pillows, glowing and smiling, her hand resting over the fresh bandage on her lower back. My kidney was already inside her.

"The doctor said the transplant was a perfect match," Reid murmured, pressing his lips to her knuckles. "You're going to be okay now. I promised I'd save you."

Sienna's eyes glistened. "I was so scared, Reid. What if she'd found out it was for me?"

He laughed softly. "Elara? She believed every word. I told her it was for a dying child, and she signed the consent form that same night. She didn't even ask for the kid's name."

They laughed together. Soft, intimate, conspiratorial.

I hovered above them, and something in my chest — something that should no longer exist — cracked wide open.

He'd told me it was for a six-year-old boy with renal failure. He'd shown me a photo of a child with hollow eyes and a bald head. He'd said, "Elara, you're the only match. If you don't do this, he'll die before Christmas."

I'd agreed in under a minute.

Because that was who I was — the wife who never said no. The wife who donated blood when his mother needed surgery, who worked double shifts to pay off his student loans, who slept on the couch for a year so his "visiting cousin" Sienna could take the bedroom.

She was never his cousin.

Reid tucked a strand of hair behind Sienna's ear. "Once the divorce is final, we'll leave the country. I've already transferred her savings into our account."

My savings. Every cent I'd earned in four years of overtime, night shifts, and skipped meals.

Sienna tilted her head. "What about her? Won't she cause problems?"

Reid's smile didn't waver. "She's still in post-op recovery. By the time she wakes up and figures it out, we'll be long gone."

But I would never wake up.

And he didn't even know yet.
