Chapter 3

Claire was a forensic accountant.

When I say God has a sense of timing, I mean it.

Within two days, Claire had traced Ryan's financial trail with surgical precision. What she uncovered made the affair look like the least of his sins.

Ryan had been siphoning money from his own law firm.

Not just skimming — systematically embezzling client trust funds, rerouting them through shell accounts, and funneling them into his second life with Megan.

Over $1.4 million in the past three years.

"This isn't just divorce material," Claire said, looking up from her laptop. "This is prison."

I stared at the spreadsheets she'd laid out across my kitchen table. Every number was a betrayal with a dollar sign.

"He told me we couldn't afford the better cancer treatment," I whispered.

Claire's jaw tightened. She said nothing. She didn't need to.

While Claire continued her deep dive, I focused on my own preparation.

I quietly consulted with a divorce attorney — not just any attorney, but Helen Park, the most feared family lawyer in the state.

Helen had a reputation: she didn't just win divorces, she annihilated the opposing party.

During our first meeting, I laid everything on the table — the affair, the secret family, the hidden assets, the embezzlement, and my cancer diagnosis.

Helen listened without interrupting. When I finished, she leaned back and said, "Mrs. Carter, your husband didn't just cheat on you. He committed fraud against you. In this state, dissipation of marital assets during an affair is recoverable. And with your medical condition, any judge will see you as the priority."

"What about Lily?"

"Full custody. No question."

I exhaled for the first time in days.

"One more thing," Helen added. "Don't let him know. Not yet. The longer he thinks you're unaware, the more rope he has to hang himself."

So I played the dutiful, unsuspecting wife.

Every morning, I made his coffee. Every evening, I asked about his day. Every night, I lay beside him and counted the ceiling tiles until he fell asleep.

Meanwhile, I was quietly moving my personal documents to Claire's house — birth certificates, tax records, Lily's medical files, our marriage certificate.

I also started a secret bank account and began redirecting small amounts from the grocery budget. It wasn't much, but it was mine.

One night, Ryan came home unusually early with takeout from my favorite restaurant.

"I figured you deserved a treat," he said with a wink.

We ate together, and he was charming — more charming than he'd been in months. He complimented my appearance, asked about my treatment, and even offered to take Lily to school the next morning.

For a fleeting moment, I almost wavered.

Then my phone buzzed under the table. Claire had sent a new finding.

[He bought her a $15,000 diamond ring last month. Check the credit card statement I forwarded.]

I looked across the table at Ryan, who was smiling at me while twirling pasta on his fork.

The ring on my finger — my engagement ring — had cost $2,000. He'd told me it was all he could afford at the time, and I'd said it was perfect because it came from him.

I smiled back at him.

"This is lovely, Ryan. Thank you."

"Anything for you," he said.

Two can play this game, I thought.

And I play to win.

Helen called me the next morning with an update.

"I've subpoenaed his firm's financial records. Once we file, his partners will be notified of the discrepancies. He won't just lose the marriage — he'll lose his license."

"Good," I said.

"There's one more thing, though. Are you sitting down?"

I gripped the phone tighter. "What is it?"

"The condo he bought for the other woman — it's registered under your name."

"What?"

"He used your social security number and forged your signature on the deed. Technically, you own it."

I laughed — a real, genuine laugh for the first time in weeks.

"Helen, when can we file?"

"Friday. But there's something I need you to do first — and you're not going to like it."
