Chapter 1

The satisfying satisfying moment I satisfying signed my divorce papers, my ex-husband's new girlfriend wrapped her arms around his neck and whispered, "Baby, make her give back the black card—I want it for our honeymoon."

Ethan Cole didn't even flinch. He extended his palm toward me. "You heard her. Hand it over."

I stared at the man I'd spent three years building from nothing—funded his startup, cosigned his loans, introduced him to every investor he'd ever met—and watched him wiggle his fingers impatiently for the credit card I'd been paying off every single month.

I almost laughed.

His girlfriend, Mira Lawson, clung tighter to his arm, her glossy lips curling into a smirk. "Don't make this harder than it needs to be, Vivian. You lost. Accept it gracefully."

Lost.

That word echoed through me, not with pain, but with a cold, crystalline clarity.

Three years ago, Ethan Cole had been a nobody—no degree worth mentioning, no connections, no capital. I had poured everything into him. My savings. My network. My reputation. I had walked him into rooms he had no business being in and vouched for him until people stopped asking questions.

And how had he repaid me?

Six months ago, Mira joined his company as a "marketing consultant." Within weeks, she was attending client dinners on his arm. Within two months, she'd moved into the apartment I was still paying rent on. By month three, Ethan sat me down and told me, with a straight face, that he'd "outgrown" our relationship.

He filed for divorce. Cited "irreconcilable differences."

He didn't even have the decency to admit he'd been sleeping with her the entire time.

And now, on the day our divorce was finalized, he wanted my credit card—the one linked to my account, under my name, with my money—so his mistress could shop her way through Paris.

I pulled the black card from my wallet.

Mira's eyes lit up. She actually reached for it.

I snapped it in half.

The crack echoed through the attorney's office like a gunshot.

Mira's face went white. "You—you crazy bitch!"

Ethan slammed his hand on the table. "What the hell is wrong with you, Vivian? That card had a two-hundred-thousand-dollar limit!"

"Correction," I said, dropping the two halves onto the table. "It had a two-million-dollar limit. And it was mine. Not yours. Not hers. Mine."

Ethan's jaw tightened. He leaned across the table, lowering his voice to that dangerous register he used when he wanted to intimidate me. "You think you're clever? You think you can walk away and survive without me? I am the CEO of Pinnacle Media. Every connection you have runs through my company. I will bury you."

I picked up my bag and stood.

"Ethan. You seem to have forgotten something."

I paused at the door and looked back at him—really looked at him—for the last time.

"You didn't build Pinnacle Media. I did. Every investor, every deal, every dollar of seed money came from me. You were just the face I put in the chair."

His expression flickered. Just for a second. Just enough.

"Enjoy the chair while it lasts."

I walked out of that office and into the elevator. The doors closed. My reflection stared back at me—calm, composed, not a single tear.

My phone buzzed.

One message. From a number saved simply as "V."

"It's done. Pinnacle's entire investor portfolio has been redirected. His accounts are frozen as of nine minutes ago. Welcome back, boss."

I slid the phone back into my pocket and smiled.

Ethan Cole had no idea who he'd just divorced.
