Chapter 2

I ripped the IV from my arm and swung my legs off the bed.

Blood soaked through the hospital gown. My body screamed from the delivery. None of it mattered.

"Mrs. Cross, you can't—" The nurse reached for me.

"Touch me and I'll sue this hospital into the ground."

Something in my voice stopped her cold. Maybe it was the Sinclair steel I'd buried for four years finally breaking through.

I made it to the elevator, barefoot, bleeding, gripping the wall for support.

Third floor. VIP wing.

The hallway was quiet. Private suites lined both sides, each door sealed with keycard access.

But I could hear it — a baby crying. My baby.

Every cell in my body recognized that cry. A mother knows.

Room 312. The door was slightly ajar.

I pushed it open.

Vanessa Moore sat propped up in a hospital bed, wearing a silk robe, her hair freshly styled. She held my daughter against her chest while a photographer adjusted lighting for what appeared to be a professional newborn photoshoot.

Daniel stood beside her, his hand on Vanessa's shoulder, beaming down at the baby with a pride that made my blood boil.

"Turn her slightly left," the photographer directed. "Perfect. The light catches her eyes beautifully."

"She has Daniel's eyes," Vanessa cooed.

She had MY eyes.

"Give me my daughter."

Every head in the room snapped toward me.

Daniel's face went white. Then, with terrifying speed, his expression rearranged into concern.

"Ellie! What are you doing out of bed? You're bleeding—"

"Give. Me. My. Daughter."

Vanessa clutched the baby tighter, her perfectly manicured nails pressing into the blanket. "Excuse me? This is MY baby."

"That's MY cashmere blanket. MY baby. And you—" I pointed at Daniel, "—you drugged me and stole her."

Daniel stepped between us, his voice dropping to that calm, patronizing tone he used when he wanted me to feel crazy.

"Ellie, sweetheart, you're confused. The sedation during delivery can cause delusions. Our baby was stillborn, remember? This is Vanessa's child."

"Then why does Vanessa's baby have the birthmark I saw on my ultrasound? Crescent shape, left shoulder."

Daniel's composure cracked for exactly one second.

One second was enough.

"Vanessa carried this baby for nine months," he recovered smoothly. "I should know — I was at every appointment."

He turned to the photographer. "Could you give us a moment? My wife isn't well."

The photographer packed up quickly, sensing the tension.

Once the door closed, Daniel's mask dropped completely.

"Go back to your room, Ellie." His voice was ice. "Sign the death certificate and move on."

"Or what?"

He stepped close, his breath hot against my ear. "Or I'll have you committed. Postpartum psychosis. I already spoke to the psychiatrist on call."

My blood chilled. "You planned this."

"I planned for my daughter to have a proper mother." He glanced back at Vanessa. "Someone with breeding. Connections. Not a diner waitress who can barely afford rent."

Vanessa smiled from the bed, stroking my baby's cheek. "Don't worry, Ellie. I'll raise her beautifully. She'll have everything you could never give her."

The baby started crying again, squirming in Vanessa's stiff grip.

"She's hungry," I said. "She needs to nurse."

"Formula is perfectly fine," Vanessa snapped.

I looked at my hungry newborn in the arms of a stranger, at my husband who'd betrayed me in the most primal way a man could betray a mother.

Something ancient and dangerous woke up inside me.

Not Ellie Quinn, the quiet waitress.

Elara Sinclair, heir to a $6.2 billion empire.

I took a breath and made a decision that would change everything.

"Daniel, you don't know who I am. But you're about to find out."

He laughed. "What are you going to do, Ellie? Call your manager at the diner?"

I pulled out my phone and dialed a number I hadn't called in four years.

It rang once.

"Grandfather, it's Elara. I need you."

The silence on the other end lasted three seconds. Then a voice like granite spoke:

"Tell me where you are. I'm sending everyone."
